There are a number of skills that are unique to volleyball, which
makes it a challenging and highly rewarding sport. Volleyball skills
are not that hard to learn, but like any sport they require many hours
of practise to get good at them. There are a few main skills that are
used in volleyball. These are setting, spiking, blocking, passing,
diving and serving. Each of these skills takes a lot of practise to get
good at them, as they are not natural skills.
It's
vital that you learn your volleyball techniques correctly the first
time, or you will have a very difficult time later down the track trying
to unlearn the bad habits you have picked up and relearn the right
techniques. Learning these skills is done both during a volleyball game
and primarily during training. I like to strive to make training
sessions informative and fun as well as energetic. If people are having
fun and they are full of energy then they will continue to want to make
more progress.
Volleyball skills need to be practised in varying orders. There is nothing worse than sitting there and passing balls for an hour straight. Sometimes this can be beneficial, but there needs to be plenty of variety in order to develop the right skills. One of the things about volleyball is that you need to be able to do a few things at once. For example, you need to get your feet into the right position to pass whilst crouching down and getting your arms ready to take the pass. Volleyball is a very fast paced sport, and as a result being able to do several things at once is vital. At the end of the day though, anyone can learn to play volleyball if they are willing to put the time and effort in.
