How to Work on Your Volleyball Skills While At Home


Working on your volleyball skills at home could make a significant difference on the court. Granted, volleyball is one of the hardest sports to practice individually as the game normally requires a team effort in order to be able to score a point. The vast majority of your game will be in a team atmosphere vs. you solo; however, if you work on refining those skills, not only will you improve, but you will also improve your team's overall performance.
Depending on where your areas of opportunity are, you can find a slew of drills and things you can do at home. For example, if you need to work on your serving skills, you can set a target on a wall in the outside of your home and aim toward it. Make sure you make or draw the target high enough, sort of resembling the height of the volleyball net. Another exercise you can do at home that is super important especially if you are a front row player is practice your approach, your body position, and your arm swing.
Your approach (included in "the approach" is timing) is what will determine if you will have a good attack on the ball, or a great one. The single most common mistake a hitter makes is miss-judge or miss-time a setter's set. Once you miss-judge a set you can pretty well forget about hitting the ball with any kind of velocity. There is one position you do not want to be at, and that's in front of the ball. If you find yourself in front of the ball, you are also essentially, looking back at the ball. Being in this predicament will not allow you to look at the block that may possibly be in front of you.
Another skill you can improve by practicing at home is passing. Passing is a very important skill as a great portion of a volleyball game involves passing the ball after a serve or passing the ball from teammate to teammate. A good way to practice this skill at home is to pass the ball to a wall. Find a wall inside or outside of your home and pass against it. Practicing against a wall allows you to perfect your form and teaches you how to have greater control of your pass. Once you have mastered passing against a wall, you can make your training a little more challenging by drawing different targets on the wall and aiming to pass the ball right to the target. Taking the time out to practice on improving your skills will only make you that much better at volleyball. Your team will certainly be grateful!
