How to Set in Beach Volleyball

One of the most difficult transitions for indoor volleyball players to make when switching over to the sand game is the set. If you have watched beach volleyball in the Olympics or on t.v. you have noticed that the setting is very different.
What is the biggest difference between an indoor set and outdoor set?
When playing beach volleyball you are allowed to hold the ball for a little longer.  You are allowed to this so that the set will come out perfectly clean with no rotation.
What is the actual rule on setting a beach volleyball?
Most people think that there is some kind of rule that has to do with the ball spinning.  But the spin usually just means that the set wasn't clean.  There is a possibility of having a clean set but having some slight spin on the ball.  The ref is looking at the hands when you set, there is no rule about how many rotations are allowed.
How can I learn to set the right way for sand volleyball?
This is will take a lot of practice but you can do it.  Forget all that you know about indoor setting.  You want to keep you fingers, hands and wrist very loose.  Your hands should be open wide with all the fingers spread apart.  The pinky will most likely never come in contact with the ball.  You want to cushion the ball so that at its deepest point in your hands you are holding the sides of the ball with your elbows out.  Then you push it up and away to set.  Don't be afraid to hold the ball for a second.  You do the whole movement quickly so your aren't in contact with it for very long but it will feel much different that what you are used to.
