Preparing Your Body For the Game of Volleyball


Volleyball coaches focus on player skills when coaching. However, volleyball specific training should be part of every coach's preparation strategy.
Physically training for volleyball is a crucial aspect of preparation because volleyball is indeed physically demanding. If a volleyball player is not prepared for these demands he or she will not excel no matter how skilled he or she is.
When you think of each position on the court you can realize the volleyball specific demands of the position and just how important volleyball training really is.
Think of the most highly skilled attacker on the court. They need to possess good timing on their approach so it is important to work on coordination. They also need to hit the ball in the right direction, at the right speed and at the right height, simply hitting is not enough. This ability is a direct result of core training. When the core is strong and stable the player has a rock solid foundation from which to hit giving them the power and ability to place the ball where they want it.
When we look at the best blockers, we see that they are skilled when it comes to combining lateral movements and jumps. Again, this skill will not develop from volleyball drills alone. The athlete needs to be physically prepared to move laterally with ease and speed, the athlete needs to be able to spring up at the net. Again, we see that it is the volleyball player who has a well trained core and who has trained their flexibility and power that will excel.
The most athletic setter's often make it look easy, of course it's not. They make it look easy because they move stealth like into position to react to their teammates passes.
The best liberos react and move efficiently in the correct direction to make plays on the ball. Liberos and other defensive players need to dig, an incredibly physical move that takes athletic power, reaction and speed.
What it all comes down to is this; the difference between winning and losing on the volleyball court depends on the use of volleyball specific training. When done correctly, with a focus on core strength, stability, flexibility and endurance, volleyball specific training produces incredible results fast. I encourage you to incorporate volleyball training into your practices.
