It is important to note that there are two (2) types of vertical jumps in volleyball. You can observe the players in this kind of sport on the court to execute these leaping maneuvers like (1) taking off from the ground with both legs, that is one; and (2) jumping with just one leg, which is the other form of vertical jump. Block
What is a block for? Volleyball is, like any other sport anyway, where each team strives to win. In order to do that, the team players block the ball coming from the court of the opponent by standing at the net in order to alter an attack from the opposing team or to prevent the opponent's ball from getting into one's court. Blocks can be offensive or defensive and a good footwork helps a lot.
An offensive block is employed to prevent completely any attack from and to let the ball stay in the court of the opponent. This may be in the form of a perfect block or the roof block. It would be a perfect block if a player is able to foresee the direction of the ball and attack it skillfully. The roof block is another form of offensive blocking that displays an awesome form which is employed to redirect the speed and power of the attacker bringing the ball straight down the floor of the opponent.
A defensive is also referred to as the soft block which aims to control and redirect the ball that has been driven hard by the opponent. The soft block slows down the ball allowing easier defense. A perfect defensive block can be executed by jumping high enough and placing the hand over the net without getting into the court of the opponent. The net blocker must raise his or her palms up and should see to it that the fingers are pointing backward.
Blocking may be done solo or double or even triple which depends on how many players are in the game.
Dig
Digging is a skill and an art in one! This is a rough one and not all players are very good at it as it compels the player to thrust his or her body forward in the air to save a ball by usually landing on his or her chest. This digging style is known as the dive. When the player slides his or her hand under the ball that is almost touching the court, the form is known as the pancake. The player has to dig in order to prevent the ball from touching his or her team court driven by the opponent through an attack or a spike.
It is a must for volleyball players to master the techniques in dropping, rolling and digging techniques to avoid or at least minimize injuries. Players should be able to roll or drop skillfully his or her body to the floor and as quickly as he or she can to save a ball.
